March marks a significant occasion for us at Peppermint Ridge as we join the nationwide observance of Developmental Disability Awareness Month. This month-long celebration holds special significance as we honor the remarkable individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) who enrich our lives and communities.
Did you know that more than seven million Americans have I/DD? It's an important statistic that highlights the prevalence and diversity within our society. Over the past two decades, there has been a notable shift towards inclusivity and community integration for individuals with I/DD. Today, the majority live with their families, in their own homes, or in community-based settings, emphasizing the importance of fostering independence and autonomy.
However, despite these strides, people with I/DD continue to encounter barriers in achieving their aspirations for full participation in society. At Peppermint Ridge, we are committed to addressing these challenges and championing initiatives that promote inclusivity and opportunity for all.
